I made a video about color and put neutrals "down" in the process. This was wrong of me to do. Neutrals are not bad characters, they are necessary and useful. I hope this video will be seen as an apology to all those colors we mix that are not on the outside of the color wheel but carry their weight without much credit.
What I have learned so far: Talking about art requires a robust vocabulary but as you will see at the beginning of this video no words are needed. Andrew Wyeth's painting of a white dog on a white bed in a white room says it all. If you would be kind enough to hit the subscribe button on my Youtube channel I would be so grateful. Thank you to the 38 who have been willing to so far. I value each one of you with a big hug .

I hope I don't sound like the nagging parent of a teenager here. I really sympathize with the frustration artists have when the think they are mixing color effectively only to find out it has "turned " or "tipped" on them. It is hard to see visually but it happens in an instant and gets multiplied each time the brush is not cleaned well between mixing.
What I have learned so far : Painting is so much more about mixing color than it is about the actual painting part. Mixing is what takes the time and effort. The painting time is small in comparison. If you would subscribe to my Youtube channel after watching this video I would be so thrilled to see my audience increase. What can I say. I live for this stuff! I am booking new students now both off and online. To have a session with me give me a call at 802-454-7330 and we can get started .
On October 14th and 15th I will be part of the state wide Open Studio event. I will be demonstrating value shape painting all day in my studio . If you want to schedule a slot give me a call or email me and I will be sure to send you directions because GPS can't find us. What I have learned so far : My director behind the camera ( me) is quite the perfectionist. She's gone " all Hollywood". Today I saw a painter being born in front of my eyes. This is becoming a regular occurrence in the studio, but each time it happens it gives me such a thrill. This coaching student named "R" used the Value Viewer and the photograph together to build this painting according to value shapes. It was so exciting to see it all take form.
What I have learned so far: Painting can be taught systematically just like baking can be taught using a recipe. Sure there is always more to learn and develop but it is not a mysterious process it has rules and if you follow them and have a logical plan you can meet your goals. You can see "R"'s value dabs where she mixed and tested colors before applying them. We had a ball and I know she became an artist today. Boy oh boy do I need to learn how to edit a clip in i movie. There was some lost footage. You will see at the end I had to write my sign off.
I will learn how to fix all of this because I am determined to do it. What I have learned so far: Not even imovie for dummies is simple enough for this gal. I am learning some editing skills and some chair ballet moves.
I have clearly left dignity behind. Today I decided to search for the true value of the colors red, orange and yellow. I used a pepper to explore. You can see the test dabs I made and checked before starting to paint . Recently I have been noticing when an artist uses neutrals like a brown or gray in the background to make the colors in the foreground pop. I wanted to try that and added the polka dots for fun.
What I have learned so far : The current list is 1. Limited strokes 2. Simplifying forms 3. Using neutrals 4. Only Fools and Horses on Britbox TV. |
