Here is a quick tutorial on how to chose a picture to paint and how to know when a picture no matter how much you love it just won't work.
What I have learned so far: I am learning that being in front of a camera shows who you really are. Not who you think you are but who you really truly are. This is clearly not a trained actress. But I think you will enjoy the short video anyway.

I am answering questions people send to me about watercolor painting. Many are from Facebook but I really want to hear from you my lovely subscribers. What have you always wanted to know about watercolor but been afraid to ask?
Don't be shy...."dial me in". What I have learned so far: I was very lucky to be a special educator in my first career. It taught me how to break large complex processes into smaller steps. My watercolor students keep returning and they are learning at a rapid rate so things are on the right track. Watercolor Coaching students have been learning to mass their darks and then make test dabs for the middle tones. We have been pushing color and bending it too. Yesterday I had to stop and give them a round of applause. I mean they are really hanging in there. What I have learned so far: You have to like the colors you mix because guess what? They are going to be the colors in the painting. If you want to join us in the studio or on line click here. After a few months of Watercolor Coaching both on and off line. I see that there is a confusion about coloring and painting. Coloring is what we did in grade school. We selected colors that matched the object we wanted to fill in.
But painting is not coloring. Just like taking a photograph is not the same as seeing something in real life. Sure, they are close but how do you get the magic to happen? What I have learned so far: We have all heard value does all the work and color gets the credit. This is true. But finding the right colors and values is not enough. There is also the variable of how forms are not one solid color but comprised of many. In the example on the left I have painted a yellow , red and blue box using triads of color. On the right I have done the same thing by coloring the boxes the solid value colors they are. Which do you prefer? If you want to learn how to do this and really use watercolor to its fullest potential do it now...click here and book your first online session with me and we will "get er done"! This week was all about finding the simplicity within a rose. I chose a Free Spirit Rose because it is any thing but simple. It is very fluffy with many many overlapping layers.
This is a good thing because when I squint and look for value shapes only the essentials stick out. What I have learned so far: Oh how I wish only the essentials stuck out for me in real life. I often get mired down in worries and concerns about things that never come to be. Such a waste of time and energy. I try to get better at not doing this but although I can acquire new behavior easily letting old ones go is much harder for me to do. Is it hard for you too? |
